How the Mountain Bike Works
Mountain Bike gears keep getting complicated. Bicycles currently have 27 gear ratios. The mountain bike will use a combination of three different sized sprocket in front and nine at the rear to produce a gear ratio.

The idea behind all these gears is to allow the driver to rotate the pedal at constant speed no matter what the slope of the bike. You can understand this better by imagining a bicycle with just one tooth. Every time you turn the pedal one rotation, the rear wheel will also rotate one rotation (gear ratio 1: 1).
If the rear wheels are 26 inches in diameter, then with 1: 1 gearing, a full rotation on the pedals will produce wheels that cover 81.6 inches of ground. If you paddle at a speed of 50 RPM, this means that the bike can travel more than 340 feet per minute. This is only 3.8 MPH, which is equivalent to walking speed. It is ideal for climbing steep hills, although it is bad for land or declining.
For faster, you need a different ratio. To drive down at 25 MPH with a 50 RPM rhythm on the pedals, you need a gear ratio of 5.6: 1. Bicycles with multiple gears will give you a lot of improvement between gear ratio 1: 1 and gear ratio 6.5: 1 so you always can paddle at 50 RPM, no matter how fast you really go.
On a 27 speed Mountain Bike normally, six gear ratios are very close to each other so you can't see the difference between them. With actual use, cyclists tend to choose the front sprocket that is suitable for the slope they use and still use it, even though the front sprocket may be difficult to move due to heavy loads. It's much easier to poop between the teeth on the back.
If you tilt the hill, it is best to choose the smallest sprocket on the front then shift between the nine gears available at the rear. The more speed you have in the rear sprocket, the more profit you have.

Overall, gears are very important for Mountain Bikes because they determine your overall speed. Without gears, you will not be able to build speed and you will not be able to pound the pedal. The gears will move the pedals and help you increase speed. There are all types of gears available on mountain bikes, all of which will help you build a lot of momentum if you use it the right way.
